One half is to return to the church (name, contact info, request for prayer or more info, sharing a decision made that day). The other half the person takes home as a reminder. It contains three to five checkboxes with options for next steps from the message. One has to do with conversion, one is for rededication, and one is followed by blank space. But at least one of the checkboxes has an application point that is one of our "handholds." A handhold is a habit to build into one's life to live out one of our six measures. Each measure has two to three handholds associated with it for a total of sixteen. I usually specifically, orally reference the handhold at or near the conclusion of the sermon as a next step. So an explicit, prominent application point every week directly ties to one of our measures. I also keep track of when I've offered which handhold so that I ensure an even balance through the year.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00436093074070856791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36647615.post-5579012346746610412015-09-09T13:51:59.461-05:002015-09-09T13:51:59.461-05:00Thanks, Betsy! How are we tru...Rick, How do we define influence? How are we truly influenced by another man?

As I read the above I agreed with much of what you said, but I must emphatically state my belief that your ability to truly influence has not decreased, but rather increased!

While you may not have the formal authority you once had (as in "Hey, look at me, I am being mentored by the Lead Pastor of my church.") you now have, I believe, much greater credibility and availability to influence a few younger men that may impact this generation and the next.

When our sphere of influence is broad (as in a Plain Dealer article) it is naturally less personal and I think less impactful. Not bad, just not as personally impactful. We can impart some knowledge and information, certainly some wisdom, but it is muted for its lack of investment. There's no personal sacrifice.

While you may not be the "regional authority" you once were (so fleeting anyway) you now have the time and attention to be a greater influence in the lives of a few men who you choose to draw close.

How do we really influence another man? We get close, we humbly and sacrificially invest or time and attention, we grab his life and we press it into our own and we keep pressing for as long as it takes. I think this is how to really make an impression in a younger mans life.

No, your not Rick Duncan, Lead Pastor, anymore... But, I, for one, am happy that your influence is now small enough to really make an impression. Today I had the opportunity to listen to you...PR,
Today I had the opportunity to listen to your sermon from Sunday. My sister and I were catching up about our weekends and she said, "You have to take the time and listen to the sermon" Of course I quickly said to her, "Yea like I will have time for that." Shortly after our phone call I found myself feeling guilty and later I was asking God to show me where my free time is going. Silly me, I check my email, FB more times a day than I would like to admit. So instead of pulling out my phone, I sat down and turned your sermon on.
Jesus Never Called Me To Play It Safe! I love how God speaks to us when we listen. My pastor here preached on the persecution of Job. My point in this comment is God always knows what you need to hear and when you need to hear it. For far too long, playing it safe has been my way of life. When He comes for me I want to be able to say, "He'll have no problems recognizing me. My colors will be clear." That is a beautiful bold statement that I want to say with confidence one day.
Thank you so much for preaching this sermon PR. It hit home with me more than you could know.
-KatelynAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10586612842940408954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36647615.post-4358456454997515792014-10-13T05:56:54.000-05:002014-10-13T05:56:54.000-05:00Thanks for this posting. This past Wednesday (a couple hours before o...PR,
This past Wednesday (a couple hours before our regular prayer service) my husband I were going back and forth of whether or not we "wanted" to go to church that evening. How incredibly selfish of us. Dragging our feet we went. I hate to use that term but in truth neither of us wanted to go and our 2 year old daughter is the one who stomped her feet and cried that she indeed wanted to go to church that night. Sitting in church that evening as always God spoke to our hearts. Through our pastor He tugged on my heartstrings again. Our Pastor said, "So many christians choose a church and ask, what can this church do for me?" I subconsciously ask myself these questions often. How did I feel about worship? Why are there not more service opportunities that I like to do? And I can tell you that the list can go on. Sometimes as christians we fall into this "funk" that we don't need to be in the house of God because, insert lame excuse here, when in fact what a joy and privilege it is to be welcomed into the house of God with open arms. And whenever we are there, if we listen, our God gives us exactly what we need. The God of heaven speaks to me! So my for all my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that are questioning the need to go to church is simple, we need to go because God is waiting to use the church to speak to us.
-Katelyn LopezAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10586612842940408954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36647615.post-33043101210283759562014-09-13T19:43:18.073-05:002014-09-13T19:43:18.073-05:00Qavah, as I recall you have had more struggles tha...Qavah, as I recall you have had more struggles than most believers will ever know. But we must guard our hearts from bitterness and resentment - as I am sure you have. We must seek love and forgiveness. Then, if we make mistakes in confronting and/or leaving, they will be mistakes of the head and not of the heart. I long for heaven where one day all the relationship struggles within the body of Christ will be perfectly addressed and healed by the Price of Peace. Becoming a Christian at another event other than the church I was attending and all of my first Christian walk was with them... but as I grew quickly, things did not seem right. Many things happen and the church was being torn apart... marriages as well. Several people, including elders and other leaders left the church. Many moved to the same church. I believe we all asked to be removed from membership at the old church - which struck a bad nerve. Some things I would do differently, but those are the things that would have helped me. Thankful many of us found a place to rest in God's word and way at CVCC nd watching them grow, repent, seek God, give God and live Jesus. I miss it living so far away now.
